Managing Remotely

Increasingly we are working with colleagues and team members remotely – with intact and virtual teams. Not only can team members and colleagues be thousands of miles away, making time spent together face-to-face very difficult or infrequent, team members may be working in different time zones and are influenced by other colleagues in their location.

To ensure collaborative working we need to have the skills and techniques to work and communicate virtually, manage projects remotely and maximise the use of technology to help deliver against our objectives whilst building strong and resourceful virtual teams.

COURSE OUTCOMES

By the end of the programme, participants will:

  • Apply best practice approaches to communicating remotely and virtually as a manager or team leader 
  • Understand why your approach needs to change when working with colleagues remotely and what you can do to connect virtually
  • Support colleagues and team members remotely in an efficient and successful manner
  • Use a variety of tools to communicate remotely
  • Build team spirit when working remotely – whether that’s locally in a WFH (work from home) situation or across different time-zones and geographical locations

  • What do we need to consider when working remotely and virtually – what do we need to do differently?
  • The importance of contracting – why clarity and understanding are essential to working relationships when you can’t be physically together 
  • Managing workflow and agreeing objectives and ground rules with your remote colleagues – the concept of ‘laying out your stall’ and having clear guidelines on how you work together 
  • How to build virtual team spirit and collaboration when you cannot be together in person
  • How to encourage, reward and motivate your team when remote and virtual 
  • Communication and technology – action ready strategies to make it work for you
  • Dealing with problems, challenging situations, difficult conversations and performance issues remotely
